How do I choose an engagement ring?

Choosing an engagement ring can be a daunting task. Before you start shopping for an engagement ring for your partner, it’s worth familiarising yourself with the 4Cs: Colour, Clarity, Cut and Carat Weight, and the different shapes and cut styles of diamonds. Once you’ve done your initial research, start by looking at the jewellery that your partner already wears.

How much should I spend on an engagement ring?

The amount you spend on an engagement ring depends on your unique circumstances. There is no “right” amount; you should not feel pressured to spend a minimum (or maximum) amount to find the right ring. The old salary threshold per income limit is rarely used today. Instead, you should find a ring that you and your partner love and start saving for that ring. The cost of engagement rings at GS Diamonds ranges from a few thousand dollars up to tens of thousands of dollars, so there is more than enough choice to suit every budget. Our consultants work with you (and your partner if they are present) to find the right engagement ring, from the metal to the setting to the size and type of diamond.

Can you buy an engagement ring on a payment plan?

At GS Diamonds, you can buy an engagement ring on a flexible payment plan, making it easier to manage your budget while still choosing the perfect ring. Learn more about our available payment options.

Is it safe to buy diamond rings online?

It’s safe to buy diamond rings online, provided you shop with trusted sellers. At GS Diamonds, all our diamond engagement rings sold online across Australia and worldwide are GIA certified, with secure payment options and insured delivery for complete peace of mind.

How many carats for an engagement ring?

There’s no single answer, as it depends on budget, style, and personal preference. Both diamond carat (stone weight) and gold carat (metal purity) affect the ring’s look and value. To choose the best diamond carat size for your engagement ring, explore more useful tips in our detailed guide.

Measure your ring size

Planning a proposal or buying a ring for yourself? Here are five reliable ways to measure ring size.

How to measure your ring size

Find your size

Measure a Ring That Already Fits

Place the ring on a flat surface or ruler.
Measure straight across the centre of the inside circle
Measure in millimetres
Compare the diameter with a ring size chart.
Make sure the ring is worn on the same finger the new ring is for.

Use a Plastic Ring Sizer Tool

Slide the sizer onto your finger.
Tighten it until it feels snug but comfortable.
Make sure it slides over the knuckle with slight resistance.
Check it sits securely at the base without spinning.
Read the indicated size on the tool.

String or Paper Strip Method

Wrap a string or paper strip around the base of your finger.
Mark where the ends meet.
Lay it flat and measure the length in millimetres.
Compare the measurement with a ring size chart.
Avoid pulling too tight — this method is a rough estimate only.

Printable Ring Size Chart

Print the ring size chart at 100% scale.
Place your ring over the printed circles.
Find the circle that fits perfectly inside the band.
Ensure there are no gaps or overlaps.
Use a ring worn on the correct finger for accuracy.
