The "Four C's" of diamonds stand for Carat, Cut, Clarity, and Colour. These are the characteristics by which diamonds are judged when it comes to quality and value. Here is a brief overview of each:
A carat is the term used when measuring the weight of a diamond. The higher the carat the heavier the diamond, and not necessarily the bigger the diamond. The size of a diamond is not distinguished by the carat as it is often assumed. The universal standard diamond carat weight is measured as - 1 carat is 200 milligrams, so a diamond that is 3 carats would be 600 milligrams.
The cut of a diamond is what gives it that pretty sparkle we all want. The cut refers to a diamond's symmetry, proportions, and its ability to catch and reflect light. Each diamond is cut at different angles, designed to seek out the best reflections for light to bounce across the beautiful gem.
The clarity of a diamond is ranked on a grading system, and its grade is determined by how well light passes through a diamond when it is viewed at 10x under a microscope. Internal flaws in the gem, called blemishes and inclusions, block or bend the light that reflects against a diamond . To get a flawless diamond it would have to have no inclusions, in clarity which is very rare.
Diamonds are found in a range of different colours, and the diamonds that are considered ‘fancy colours’ will go for the highest prices. However, generally the most sought after colour for a diamond is to actually be colourless. Ranked on a colour grading scale of D (being best) - Z (being least), diamonds with colour can affect the light that can reflect through a diamond, making a colourless diamond the best at getting that perfect sparkle.
When it comes to diamonds, there are two main ways that they can be obtained - through mining or through lab-grown methods.
GS Diamonds Sydney offers both lab grown diamonds and mined diamonds. While some may prefer one over the other, it is important to remember that both options have their own unique benefits.
For instance, lab grown diamonds are often seen as being more environmentally friendly since they do not require mining.
In addition, they can also be created in a variety of colours, which may be appealing to those who want something a little different.
On the other hand, mined diamonds are typically seen as being more rare and valuable. They are also generally believed to be of better quality since they have been through the natural process of being formed underground.
Ultimately, it is up to the individual to decide which type of diamond is right for them. GS Diamonds is proud to offer both options so that everyone can find the perfect diamond to suit their needs.
