An emerald cut is an elongated rectangular shape with symmetrical cut-off corners. Emerald-cut diamonds create a hall-of-mirrors effect that interplays light and dark planes. Made to emphasise dramatic flashes of light, the long parallel lines of an emerald cut diamond produce an elegant appeal – resulting in a cut that can be described as both unique and classic. While most emerald cut diamonds are rectangular, jewellers also make square emerald-cut diamonds that exude the same characteristics as the rectangular shape.
Emerald cut diamonds are generally more expensive than other shapes due to the amount of time it takes a jeweller to produce. The clarity grade required for emerald-cut diamonds is often higher, which also increases the price. A high clarity diamond will assist in creating the excellent light refraction that we all know and love about an emerald-cut diamond.
The size of an emerald cut diamond ring is calculated on the diamond’s length-to-width ratio to tell how squared or elongated its shape is. The ideal length-to-width ratio for an emerald cut diamond ring is between 1.30 and 1.60, with 1.50 being the most common aesthetic choice. In saying this, there is no “right” size for an emerald-cut diamond ring as it is dependent on personal preference.
